On July 3, 2025, members of the Sri Sathya Sai Center of Northeast Atlanta, GA, volunteered at Doghead Farm, a half-acre urban farm dedicated to growing vegetables for marginalized communities. The service activity was organized by Concrete Jungle (www.concrete-jungle.org), an organization that forages, farms, and improves food access throughout Georgia. Nearly all of the harvested produce—about 99.9%—is distributed to local food banks that directly serves food-insecure communities across Georgia.

Sai volunteers, including seniors, joined other community members to harvest fruits and vegetables that might, otherwise, have gone to waste. The volunteers were divided into two groups: one mulched and prepared vegetable beds for planting, while the other harvested cucumbers and beans and removed weeds.

Volunteers also inspected plants for bugs, removing them by hand to ensure the vegetables maintain their organic integrity. After being harvested, the vegetables were washed to prepare them for distribution to food banks.

Despite the strenuous work, volunteers found the experience incredibly rewarding, knowing their efforts helped many households facing food insecurity. At the end, they were treated to snacks and mingled with other volunteers, fostering a strong sense of community. Sai volunteers plan to participate in this activity again next month and continue doing so, until their tree-planting activity begins in the fall, displaying an ongoing commitment to support local farms and food access across Georgia.
