“Selfless service is the blossom of love—a way to expand the heart and experience divinity in all.” Guided by this timeless message from Sri Sathya Sai Baba, members of the recently formed Women's Wing of the SSSIO-USA Pacific North Region came together in a beautiful act of compassion, crafting 100 handmade blankets for toddlers in honor of Swami's Centennial Birthday.

The spark for this initiative came from long-time community member Sathya Rao. In 2024, feeling a deep desire to offer something meaningful, but being unable to participate in strenuous outdoor activities, she turned to her personal talent: knitting. With humility and faith, she envisioned a goal of 100 blankets, trusting that with divine grace and the support of many loving hands, the offering would manifest.

“I knew I couldn’t do it alone,” Sathya shared. “But with pure love from everyone involved, I knew this dream could become a reality.”

The Blanket Project was fueled by that singular, heartfelt intention, and found its perfect home in KidVantage, a Seattle-based nonprofit. Their mission—supporting families facing financial hardship and systemic inequities by providing essentials like clothing and hygiene products—aligned perfectly with the project’s spirit. With KidVantage’s enthusiastic response, the initiative blossomed into a beautifully coordinated effort, led by the Women's Wing of the SSSIO-USA Pacific North Region, culminating in the official launch of the blanket project in October 2024.

To ensure the project was inclusive, the Project leader and Women's Wing coordinators introduced loom knitting, a simple method that allowed even those without prior experience to participate. Regional workshops soon became joyful spaces of connection, where experienced crafters and beginners worked side-by-side in a spirit of unity.

The effort drew in approximately 40 women. While some met in small groups at homes or public libraries, others worked quietly and steadily from their own living rooms, weaving love into every row of stitches. A few women outside our Sai Circle also offered their time and talents, extending the reach of love even further.

On October 18, 2025, the group gathered to label the blankets, assemble gift bags, and reflect on their personal experiences. Participants shared that as the project unfolded, it strengthened their sense of sisterhood, deepened their connection to the message of love-in-action, and brought a renewed sense of purpose and meaning in their lives. It was a spiritual closing to a service project rooted in love, unity and devotion, but also a heartfelt conclusion—a moment to pause and honor the love, care and effort that had gone into each handmade blanket.

On November 10, 2025, just ahead of the Centennial Celebrations, the 100 blankets were delivered to KidVantage. The organization expressed their deep gratitude: “A huge thank you to the Sri Sathya Sai International Organization. These beautiful blankets will help keep impoverished children warm during the cold winter months.”

What began as one woman’s heartfelt prayer blossomed into a regional movement of "love-in-action" and a collective expression of service, spreading warmth not only to the children who will receive the blankets, but also to everyone who contributed. These 100 blankets carry far more than physical warmth; they carry the blessings of a community united in service, proving that when many hearts beat as one, even a simple stitch can change a life.
