Mobile Loaves and Fishes: Austin, Texas
Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF) is a food truck service, where volunteers hit the streets seven nights a week, 365 days a year to deliver food, clothing, hygiene products and other items to the homeless. Members of the Sathya Sai Center of Austin join the Riverbend Church in Austin once a month in their MLF Kitchen and use their MLF truck, to support their feeding program for the homeless and underprivileged. Sai volunteers began this project in early 2019. They prepare 120-130 sandwiches in the MLF kitchen. The truck crew then load all the sandwiches, water, drinks, chips, milk, yogurt, fruits, and clothing for subsequent distribution in the Austin area.
Since Sathya Sai Center signed up to participate in this service activity, several members have also volunteered to drive the truck around town for distribution of goods, while other volunteers procure supplies and prepare meals. Volunteers have also assisted with providing the homeless with clothing (especially warm winter jackets, shoes and socks) hygiene products, toys and books. Since October 2019, Sai Center members’ participation in Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF) Truck Service has increased from once a month to twice a month, with the goal of making this a weekly service activity eventually.
