Community Eyeglasses Distribution: Northern California
Eyesight is often taken for granted, and sadly, blurred vision is a common problem among the uninsured who cannot afford eyeglasses. To address this urgent healthcare need, the Sri Sathya Sai International Organization (SSSIO) hosts community events to provide vision testing and distribute reading glasses. The organization held one such event at the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless in Northern California on October 9, 2024. Prior to the event, new SSSIO volunteers received 30 minutes of training from experienced members, familiarizing themselves with the eye testing process and inventory of glasses. Equipped with their knowledge and skills, 15 trained volunteers were able help 80 guests experience the joy of improved sight.
Attendees expressed gratitude for receiving eyeglasses, particularly those who had lost or damaged their previous pairs and couldn't afford replacements. A 60-year-old man was overjoyed to easily read a milk carton label, while a 71-year-old, struggling to read a computer programming textbook after losing his prescription glasses, was thrilled to finally be able to decode the mystifying pages of his book. One woman expressed immense joy at finally being able to clearly see her family photos on her phone.
Many lessons were learned. The team observed that glasses with a +3.0 power rating were most in demand at this event, compared to previous events where +1.0 to +2.0 ratings were more sought after, suggesting the attendees they were serving were older and faced more medical challenges due to limited access to routine care. This insight will inform future planning.
The event also highlighted the need for translators as some attendees spoke only Spanish. Furthermore, many expressed a desire for comprehensive vision tests and eyeglasses for activities beyond reading, such as driving. Some attendees have access to vision tests through by insurance provided by the State of California but lacked access to affordable eyeglasses. All these invaluable observations will serve the SSSIO to better meet the needs of the community at the next eyeglasses distribution event
