The Women’s Wing of the Sri Sathya Sai International Organization (SSSIO) in Northern California, USA, initiated this project in honor of Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s 100th birthday. The beanies were lovingly handmade for women and children undergoing medical treatment and were first intended for distribution in nursing homes and hospitals across Northern California. After consulting with the Women’s Coordinator of Southern California and learning about the need there, the project expanded, and beanies were also distributed to Kaiser facilities in Southern California.

As the women of SSSIO-USA Northern California , we united with a heartfelt goal: to create 100 beanies - 50 for babies and 50 for women. This number symbolized not only the Centenary celebration, but also 100 acts of kindness and 100 prayers offered to those in need.

One volunteer reflected on the deeper meaning behind this effort. A beanie may appear simple, yet its impact is profound. For a newborn, it brings warmth, comfort, and protection during their most delicate moments. For a woman facing illness or medical treatment, it offers dignity, reassurance, and the feeling of being cared for. Through these small gestures, we become instruments of universal love, touching lives we may never meet but are connected to in spirit. This project reflected the true essence of selfless service. Every stitch became a prayer, and every completed beanie became a symbol of love. As our hands worked with dedication, our minds grew still, and our hearts expanded. In giving, we felt ourselves being uplifted.

Another volunteer shared that participating in this initiative reminded her that service is not measured by quantity, but by purity of intention. Whether one of us contributed a single beanie or many, each offering held equal value when created with sincerity and love. The joy we experienced while crafting something for another’s comfort became a spiritual practice. Working toward a shared goal strengthened our unity. We exchanged ideas, encouraged one another, and celebrated each milestone. Through this collective effort, we experienced the deeper meaning of community - supporting one another while serving society.

A third volunteer expressed how meaningful the experience was for her. She shared that she enjoyed crocheting and felt grateful for the opportunity to use her hobby to help others. She took joy in choosing colors and patterns and put great care into each beanie. She hoped that every recipient would feel the warmth and love woven into the stitches. She prayed for healing, comfort, and brighter days for all who received them. Through this work, yarn and thread transformed into comfort, hope, and prayer. Creativity became joy, and careful stitching became meditation.

Another volunteer shared that she enjoyed making the beanies and appreciated the opportunity to learn a new skill. The project inspired her to keep creating beanies and to distribute them whenever possible. She expressed hope that this service project would continue.

This initiative taught us that even the smallest act, when done together, creates meaningful change. One beanie warms one person - but 100 beanies become a collective expression of compassion from Northern California to the wider community.

As we move forward, we remember that true celebration lies not in grand events, but in acts of kindness. The Centenary honors the legacy of love and service of our beloved Spiritual Teacher, Sri Sathya Sai Baba, and through this project, the women of Region 7 upheld that legacy through action. Our collective prayer remains: May every beanie carry warmth, healing, and hope.
