Holiday Book Drive : SSSIO - USA North-Central Region SSE Student Council
During the 2026 holiday season, the Sai Spiritual Education (SSE) Student Council of the SSSIO-USA North-Central Region (Region 5) embraced the true spirit of giving. The council embraced a heartwarming service project that aimed to provide children at nearby shelters with creative and educational resources that inspire imagination, encourage learning, and offer joy to the children during the holiday season.
Early childhood reading is critical for brain development and provides a vital foundation for language, literacy and emotional intelligence. Children reading books, and even listening to their elders reading, boosts their vocabulary by millions of words, enhances focus, fosters empathy, and nurtures a lifelong love of learning. Recognizing this truth, the Student Council sought to carry out a book drive to provide children in shelters, who may otherwise lack access, the gift of books. The initiative resonated deeply with the Sai community as it helped put into practice the profound teaching of Sathya Sai Baba: “Hands that serve are holier than lips that pray.” Many Sai center families generously donated the beloved story books from their own homes, eager to bring holiday cheer to the shelter children.
Over a two-week collection period leading up to the holidays, the donation boxes across North-Central Region Sai centers were quickly filled with gently used storybooks as well as captivating newly bought books. Included were new coloring books and picture books for younger children, as well as art supplies, including crayons, markers, and pencils. The excitement grew as center members looked forward to the tangible impact their contributions would make. When the donations were delivered to nearby shelters, the joy on the children's faces left no doubt - it served as a powerful reminder that service is one of the highest expressions of love and faith.
The Student Council members shared their personal reflections on the project:
- "While planning this holiday service, I felt fulfilled. It reminded me of my SSE classes where I learned that the power of service brings a community together and celebrates unity." — Aparna Sadhanagiri (Chicago West Sai Center)
- "I felt inspired by the level of engagement from our Sai centers. Thanks to our community's generosity, we provided children with resources they might not have had otherwise." — Shyam Suresh (Detroit Metro Sai Center)
- "I felt truly blessed to see our Sai center unite to brighten a child’s day. Watching the children light up as they chose their own coloring books and supplies was a heartwarming reminder of how meaningful even small acts of kindness can be." — Rachana Raghunathan (Detroit Metro Sai Center)
Through this project, the SSE Student Council did more than just organize an event; they created a space for compassion and selfless giving. By coming together for a common cause, the students lived out the teaching, "Service to man is service to God," proving that the greatest joy of the season came from giving to others with an open heart.
