City House Outreach: Dallas, TX
City House provides emergency shelter, transitional residential living and street-outreach programs and services to needy youth who face abuse, neglect or homelessness. City House has served the major part of North Texas since 1998, creating numerous “Safe Place” locations around the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. When a child checks in at any one of these locations, City House is contacted, and they arrange immediately to pick up the child to ensure their safety. City House handles nearly 1,000 crisis calls annually.
From February 11 to March 11, 2021, Young Adults of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Center of Dallas conducted a collection drive for City House. The homes of five Center members were designated as drop-off locations. The Young Adults also created an online link to the Amazon webpage to facilitate easy purchase and shipping of these items if Center members so wished to donate. Over 30 Young Adult volunteers collected items for the drive, which included
- personal hygiene items (body wash, conditioner, shampoo, body lotion, facial cleanser);
- household items (bedding, mattress cover, sleeping bags, iron/ironing board, household cleaners of detergent, wipes, bleach cleaner, dishwasher gel);
- food items (water, fruit cups, mandarin oranges, mixed fruit cups, chips, peanut butter crackers, protein bars, applesauce, mixed nuts);
- therapy items (sensory stress balls, yo-yos, tracing paper, sketch pads, Rubik cubes).
On March 15, 2021, three volunteers from the Dallas Sai Center transported and delivered the items to City House. Ms. Tracey Sherman, the Street Outreach and Safe Place Coordinator, expressed her deepest appreciation to the volunteers for the delivery of the much-needed supplies. She explained that since the inception of the pandemic, City House had struggled to sustain their operation due to a severe shortage of these items. She also noted that several homeless children would come in for showers and meals, so the donation of snacks and toiletries would greatly help meet their needs.
Efforts are underway to continue to assist the City House on a continued basis.
