Guru Poornima Celebrations at Sai Prema Nilayam: Riverside, CA
Guru Poornima 2026: A Day of Gratitude, Wisdom, Music, and Service
Guru Poornima is a sacred occasion to honor the spiritual teacher—the Guru—who dispels the darkness of ignorance and guides us toward the light of Truth. It is a day to express gratitude for Divine guidance and renew our commitment to living the Guru's teachings.
On Saturday, July 25, 2026, devotees gathered at Sai Prema Nilayam in Riverside, CA to celebrate Guru Poornima in an atmosphere filled with prayer, devotional music, wisdom, fellowship, and selfless service.
Morning prayers and devotional singing.
The day began at 6:00 a.m. with morning prayers, creating a serene, contemplative start to the celebrations. This was followed by devotional singing, which filled Sai Prema Nilayam with an uplifting vibration and set the tone for a day centered on remembrance of the Divine and gratitude for the sacred Guru-disciple relationship.
SSSIO-USA Southern California Region President, Mrs. Seema Miller, welcomed the audience and gave a brief outline for the day’s events.
Inspirational speakers and musical offering.
The first speaker, International Young Adults Coordinator Sister Vahinie Pillay from South Africa, shared an inspiring message based on the four F’s: Follow the Master, Face the Devil, Fight to the End, and Finish the Game. She added a fifth F—Faith—reminding devotees that steadfast faith is essential as we journey along the spiritual path. Her message encouraged everyone to remain committed to the Guru's teachings, especially when faced with challenges.
The morning continued with a beautiful musical offering by Smt. Gaayatri, accompanied by flute and tabla. Through her exquisite renditions of Hindustani classical music, she offered a heartfelt tribute to the Guru. The soulful flute, rhythmic tabla, and devotional quality of her voice created a deeply spiritual atmosphere. The music reminded everyone that when offered with love and devotion, music itself becomes a form of prayer.
The second speaker, Brother Aravind Balasubramanya from Bengaluru, India, spoke on the deeper meaning of Pada Sevanam. He explained that true Pada Sevanam is not merely the physical worship of Bhagawan’s Lotus Feet, or the offering of flowers, but also an inner act of devotion—taking refuge mentally at the Lotus Feet and holding them in the heart. He connected this beautifully to the words, “Manasa Bhajore Guru Charanam.”
Fellowship and Gratitude
Following the program, the gathering concluded with closing prayers, bringing the formal celebration to a peaceful and prayerful close. Members then shared a delicious lunch, enjoying not only the meal but also the fellowship, joy, and sense of unity integral to satsang.
Yet, in keeping with the true spirit of Guru Poornima, the day’s celebration did not end with prayer and fellowship. All Sai volunteers in the region turned their gratitude into action through two meaningful service projects.
Gratitude in Action
The first service project involved assembling toiletry kits for first responders. They prepared these kits as a gesture of appreciation and support for those who serve their communities, often responding courageously when others are in critical need. Through this simple but meaningful act of service, Sai devotees expressed their gratitude for the dedication and sacrifice of first responders.
The second service project focused on supporting the underprivileged. Sai volunteers assembled food bags with a variety of dry food items, creating practical packages to distribute to individuals and families in need.
This service reflected one of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's fundamental teachings: spiritual celebration finds its fullest expression when love becomes selfless action. When we see the Divine in others, service ceases to be an obligation and becomes an offering of love.
Living the Guru’s Teachings
The day at Sai Prema Nilayam beautifully reflected the many dimensions of the Guru’s teachings: quiet prayers at dawn; soulful musical offerings to open the heart; wisdom to illuminate the mind; fellowship to strengthen the community; and service with humility, compassion, and love; proving that when gratitude transforms into service, the Guru's teachings truly come alive.
As everyone departed Sai Prema Nilayam, the spirit of Guru Poornima continued beyond the venue. The Guru Poornima celebration of 2026 was therefore more than a gathering. It was a sacred reminder to every Sai devotee that the light of the Guru shines brightest when we carry that light into the world through love, service, and selfless action.
