What if a walk through a snowy Michigan neighborhood could become a sacred pilgrimage halfway around the world?

For the past decade, the Sri Sathya Sai Center of Ann Arbor has answered that question through Padhayatra to Parthi (P2P) - a unique wellness and spiritual initiative that transforms ordinary daily steps into an extraordinary journey of discipline and devotion.

Originally created to address a common challenge during Michigan's long winters, P2P encourages members to remain physically active while strengthening their spiritual practice. Rather than allowing cold weather to limit movement and community engagement, the center reimagined wellness as an act of worship.

Each year, from the first Thursday of January until Guru Purnima, participants commit to a daily goal of 5,000 steps - or equivalent physical activities. These include yoga, snow shoveling, biking, dancing, gardening, strength training, or household chores, etc. Members enrich these moments by chanting, singing bhajans, or engaging in silent prayer, turning everyday routines into opportunities for mindfulness and remembrance of God.

The initiative's greatest strength is its inclusivity and a WhatsApp forum where pilgrims share their steps and reflections. Children as young as seven, seniors well into their seventies, students, young adults, families, and even beloved pets all contribute to the collective pilgrimage. Flexible activity conversions ensure that everyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can participate in the journey together.  Periodic updates on individual and group progress motivate everyone to stay committed and feel vital to reaching Parthi.

In 2026, the Sri Sathya Sai Center of Ann Arbor proudly and gratefully celebrated the 10th anniversary of P2P - a milestone commemorated with a community-wide 10K Walk. Whether members completed the full distance individually or joined together in teams, the celebration reflected the very heart of the initiative: unity, encouragement, and shared purpose.

Over ten years, P2P has become far more than a fitness challenge. It has inspired healthier lifestyles, strengthened community bonds, and demonstrated that spiritual practice can flourish through the simplest acts of daily living. Every step taken has reinforced a timeless truth: when movement is guided by love and selfless intentions, even the longest distance can be crossed together.

For many participants, P2P's impact extends well beyond physical fitness. Center member Mohana, who has participated in the walkathon for the past two years, says P2P transformed walking from an occasional activity into a daily habit that has improved both her mood and physical well-being. She notes that viewing each walk as an offering to God has made the practice deeply meaningful. "Many days, I imagine Swami is walking with me," she shares, adding that even simple opportunities, like parking farther away from a store, have become welcome chances to continue her pilgrimage to Parthi.

Young Adult Sai Shyam echoes this sentiment, reflecting that P2P has helped him approach daily exercise with greater purpose and consistency, turning ordinary physical activity into an act of devotion while strengthening his connection with the P2P community.

As the Sathya Sai Center of Ann Arbor looks towards the future, Padhayatra to Parthi continues to serve as a model of holistic wellness - where physical activity combined with spiritual goals not only promotes individual health, but also strengthens and uplifts our community.  Every step taken with awareness brings participants closer to the ideal of selfless “Love All, Serve All.”
