Hustle for Hope 5K: Raising Mental Health Awareness in Houston

A festive atmosphere filled with music, food, and an uplifting community spirit marked the annual Hustle for Hope 5K walk/run, an event dedicated to raising awareness about mental health. On Saturday, March 28, 2026, families from across the Houston area gathered at George Bush Park in Katy, TX, eager to participate in the event organized by the Sai Spiritual Education (SSE) Group 4 Boys (ages 15–18) of the Sri Sathya Sai Center of South Houston.

Fostering Parent-Child Communication

The primary purpose of the event was to highlight how vital strong parent-child relationships and effective communication are to mental health.

  • Guidance for Parents: Ms. Charlee Bellfonte, a licensed social worker from Morton Ranch Junior High, addressed the parents first. She offered advice on strengthening bonds with their children, highlighted the value of truly listening, and underscored the gravity of youth mental health concerns.
  • Guidance for Youth: Turning her attention to the youth, Ms. Bellfonte provided practical suggestions on navigating tense family dynamics. She encouraged the children to speak up when struggling emotionally and to consider their parents' viewpoints during disagreements.

Following the presentation, beautiful weather beckoned 55 walkers and 22 runners to hit the trail. The rest of the day was filled with vibrant music, refreshments, and joyful camaraderie. To wrap up the celebration, trophies were awarded to the top three finishers, while certificates and ribbons were presented to all participants.

Behind the Scenes: Leadership and Teamwork

Preparation for the 5K began two months in advance. The SSE boys took full ownership of the logistical heavy lifting, managing tasks such as: mapping the race route, securing local city permits, managing registrations and designing promotional flyers. Weekly planning sessions and digital coordination kept the group on track, allowing them to troubleshoot challenges smoothly. Under the guidance of their mentors at the South Houston Sai Center, the young men gained hands-on leadership skills, learning the value of accountability and teamwork in large-scale event planning. Through clear communication, hard work, and genuine passion, the Group 4 students hosted a fantastic event that successfully united the community around a critically important cause.
