Food and Clothing Distribution at Harmony House: Houston, TX
Volunteers from the Sri Sathya Sai Center of South Houston have been delivering food and supplies to Harmony House on a weekly basis for over a year. Harmony House was founded in 1992 and is dedicated to addressing the housing and health care needs of Houston’s escalating homeless population. Its goal is to provide supportive services, tools and training to homeless persons who are ready to transition to permanent housing, self-sufficiency, and independence.
During the sweltering heat in the months of July and August, a service opportunity was identified to provide T-shirts, hygiene packs and caps to the homeless along with lunch on July 25, 2021. Planning and coordination of the activity began in mid-June. Volunteers worked with multiple vendors to procure the items in a timely manner. Ten volunteers helped pack the items three days prior to the event. All items were transported on the morning of July 25th and set-up for distribution. Recipients began lining up at 11 AM. A short prayer was offered. Each recipient received a SUBWAY sandwich, chips, cookie, a banana, and a bag containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, soap, two energy bars, juice, along with a T-shirt and a baseball cap. Fifteen volunteers participated in the distribution activity and served approximately 100 people.
Following this service activity, volunteers have been in contact with the Harmony House facility to identify and fulfill ongoing needs.
Wes Williams, Facilities Manager of Harmony House, thanked the volunteers for their participation: “We thank you for bringing these lovely surprise packages, especially the hygiene kits, T-shirts and caps. They will all come in handy.”
